Police offer reward for cult leaders

Police yesterday offered rewards of 2 million shillings (US$1,300) for information leading to the arrests of six cult leaders whose followers were killed in Uganda.

Police have been searching for the leaders since 530 people were killed in a cult chapel fire in the village of Kanungu on March 17. Following the fire, authorities unearthed a series of mass graves in nearby villages, turning up 394 more corpses, many of them strangled or stabbed.

Police spokesman Asuman Mugenyi said the rewards are available to anyone - inside or outside Uganda - who helps track down the cult leaders.
