Anti-China attempt ends up in failure

GENEVA: China on Tuesday foiled an anti-China proposal pushed by the United States when a "no-action motion" was adopted at the 56th session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. It was China's ninth victory since 1990.

Now, the question is: What is the real motive of the United States in its repeated attempts against China and other developing countries at the UN human rights sessions?

Always posing as a "human rights judge" and concocting resolutions now and then, the United States wants to seek nothing but hegemony. It interferes in other countries' internal affairs. It imposes its values, including its human rights views, upon others. All done in the guise of human rights.

Anyone who refuses to follow United States' edicts will be subjected to punishment, threats of force, or even the use of force.

Brandishing the club of human rights before China, the United States hates to see a China with political stability, rapid economic growth and a determination to follow its own path of development. Therefore, it has used the issue of human rights in various ways to defame China, cause trouble and interfere in China's internal affairs.

It is a well-known fact that China has consistently respected universal principles of human rights, dedicating itself to actively advocating and safeguarding the Chinese people's human rights and fundamental freedoms. Through long unremitting efforts by the government, China has achieved remarkable progress in this regard with its people enjoying more rights and freedoms than ever before.

However, the United States turns a blind eye to this. It always seeks confrontation with China on the human rights issue. And the reason is nothing but malice. Besides, with its world-recognized poor performance in human rights, the United States is not in the position at all to be a human rights judge of others.

China has always been pursuing the policy of dialogue and co-operation on human rights, rejecting any attempt to use the issue for confrontation. Its just and reasonable stance is understood and widely supported throughout the world.

In recent years, some Western countries have refused to be part of the US-orchestrated anti-China attempts as they had in the past. Some European Union countries boycotted the anti-China resolution at the UN human rights session in 1997. Since then, there has been no EU involvement in any anti-China attempts at the UN Human Rights Commission.

The United States will hold its presidential elections this year. Behind its anti-China resolution in Geneva is domestic politics and political strife between political parties.

Changing its strategy this year, Washington used the Falun Gong cult, an evil organization hated and disdained by Chinese people, as its weapon. The United States has gone too far in linking the human rights issue with an evil cult which cannot be tolerated by any country. The real intention of the United States is to interfere in China's internal affairs under the pretext of human rights and turn the UN commission meeting room into a dirty place where US politicians canvass votes for domestic purposes.

The failure of the United States shows once again that the United States is acting against the current of the times. Naturally, Washington's arbitrary deeds were under fire from delegates of developing countries. Many delegates expressed their support for China and saw the anti-China resolution as anachronistic. They also criticized the United States for its double standard on the human rights issue.
